THE DECISION TO DISBAND COMPANY-SPONSORED TEAM SPORTS BY TEXTILE MILLS AFTER WORLD WAR II SEEMED TO TOLL THE DEATH KNELL FOR BUSH LEAGUE BASEBALL IN THE SOUTH.  HOWEVER, SOME SMALL TOWNS VENTURED TO ORGANIZE MINOR LEAGUE TEAMS TO FOSTER THE ENJOYMENT OF OUR NATION’S FAVORITE PASTIME FOR LOCAL FOLKS.  BOB WHETSTONE RECALLS HIS ROLE AS BATBOY FOR THE ORIGINAL CLASS D BASEBALL TEAM IN HIS HOME TOWN AND SUBSEQUENLTY WROTE THIS FICTIONAL ACCOUNT BASED ON HIS EXPERIENCE.

BUCK CLINTON, THRILLED TO BE SELECTED AS THE BATBOY OF RIVER BEND’S NEW PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TEAM FINDS HIMSELF IN POSSESSION OF A WELL-WORN BASEBALL BAT LEFT IN THE DUGOUT OF THE FORMER MILL TEAM BALLPARK.  AT FIRST, HE REFUSES TO BELIEVE WHAT HE’S SEEING AND HEARING.  IS HE CRAZY OR IS THIS MYSTIC BAT REALLY TALKING TO HIM?  DOES THE BAT CHOSE WHICH PLAYER WILL BECOME THE LEADING HITTER ON THE TEAM?  ALTHOUGH BUCK ENJOYS HIS INSIDE VIEW OF THE TEAM WITH THEIR COMICAL ANTICS AND COLORFUL BANTER, HE ALSO BECOMES DISENCHANTED AND SOMETIMES FRIGHTENED WITH CONFLICTS AMONG PLAYERS, OWNERS, UMPIRES AND FANS.  HIS BEST FRIENDS, TAD AND PEGGY SUE THREATEN TO DESERT HIM UNLESS HE REVEALS THE SECRET OF THE MYSTIC BAT.

BOB WHETSTONE HAS CRAFTED THIS STORY BASED ON HISTORICAL FACTS SO THAT FUTURE GENERATIONS MAY CATCH AN AUTHENTIC GLIMPSE OF THIS OFTEN OVERLOOKED SLICE OF BASEBALL MEMORABILIA.
